The 2014 UOSL4 Draft is definitely a bit weak, but at the top there is a clear cut #1
Perry Jones is almost everything you could ask for in a Power Forward, and in workouts was the clear #1 pick, he showed just what scouts expected, nice athleticism, though not necessarily strong for a PF, a nice post game, solid range to his shot, nice rebounding, and good shotblocking and stealing skills, and solid D to boot. At 6’11” he uses his size very well in the paint, and definitely has room to grow his game. Jones should come out of the gates nice, and could very well become a first team all league type player in time. Perry will only Play PF/C at the next level
Centers:
Zach Price is a pretty solid big man out of Louisville, while he isn’t an explosive player, Price has a very solid post game, and is fairly strong, A solid rebounder, and defender, with some room to grow, Scouts don’t see any part of his game that makes him scream great player. Probable solid starter or excellent backup
Michael Chandler-Chandler is an impressive defensive player, with superb shotblocking, and solid rebounding skills. What he lacks though is any form of an offensive game, and you should not expect him to ever devlop one. With work, Chandler could be a nice defensive big, and could be a top 10 shotblocker pretty easy, but, its questionable how much upside he really has…
Nerlens Noels-is scary explosive, but, extremely raw. He is a poor rebounder at this point in his career, and tends to struggle with fouls. He really isn’t an offensive threat either, but, he is a developing shotblocker, and could become an excellent player given time…some scouts feel he is just too raw though.
Kevin Huang-Huang has an impressive jump shot, and plays very good man D, but, he is fairly inept if you want him in the post. His rebounding is only ok, and he tends to be a bit turnover prone. He could become a very good player, or he could be a permanent bench warmer, scouts just don’t know what to make of him.
Power Forwards:
Alex Poythress-is just plain mediocre all around at this point. While he is willing to work hard, scouts see nothing in his game that leads them to believe the big man out of Tennessee will ever be much more than a role player. He is not a shotblocker, his defense is only ok outside that, his athleticisim is average, post game is average, rebounding is average. Just plain average.
Kyle Wiltjer-Wiltjer is a very rangy PF, with very nice upside. His rebounding is excellent, and while he is a bit wiry, he has some post moves. He will definitely need to be groomed, as his offense is a bit suspect due to his subpar athleticism, and his defense is poor, but given time and with work, there is every opportunity for Wiltjer to become a highly unique big man.
DeShaun Thomas-Thomas is a pretty good post defender, but, he wont block shots, and his rebounding is only mediocre. His game coming out of Ohio State is suited for PF only really, but his size states SF. He has ok post moves, with room to grow, and despite his diminutive size he is fairly strong, but, he tends to struggle with his ball control at times, and his rebounding is sub par. Could become a nice player if one can overlook his size and handling.
Small Forwards
Michael Gilchrist-Is known for his ability to score inside. Dominant on the inside as a Sophomore at Kentucky, Gilchrist is also a very solid defender, though not especially statistically. There are some worries about the fact that his outside game has shown little improvement in his time at Kentucky, which could leave him as a one dimensional scorer, but, he should become a nice starter even if his outside troubles don’t improve…so imagine if it does.
Jereme Richmond-Richmond is like Thomas, only much more complete as a player, he has the ability to handle the SF and PF spots, though his range is worse due in part to an awkward release. His handling too is a bit suspect, and his offensive game is still a bit raw. Where Richmond makes his living though is as a very impressive defensive player. While he doesn’t rack up stats, he is able to handle any defensive assignment thrown at him. He is a hard worker and should become a very nice player in time.
Jalen Kendrick-has a very intriguing game. While he cant handle the Point Guard position, Kendrick is a very nice passer out of the Small forward spot, and has an impressive ability to get to the hoop. He has a solid jumper, and is fairly athletic, making it so he can beat other players off the dribble and finish at the hoop. However, Kendrick is coming off a serious knee injury suffered at Memphis, and only declared due to being academically ineligible. Scouts are unsure how this knee injury will affect Kendrick.
Shooting Guards:
Austin Rivers-Rivers is an impressive player. He has an impressive touch to his shot, and is very strong despite his size, there are questions about his overall attitude and work ethic, but, his talent is too great to ignore. He does not pass the ball well at all, but, as a Shooting Guard, he is quick enough to not be a liability on defense, though he wont get you any steals, he wont get you any turnovers either. Rivers could be an excellent player one day.
Lorenzo Brown-Brown has a very nice well rounded overall game. He isn’t the best at anyone thing, but, he isn’t bad at anything in particular either. Positionally he is a nice defender, he passes well for a shooting guard and has solid form on his jump shot. Scouts dont like that nothing stands out, and at 22 he is a bit old, so his upside is a bit more limited, but he will be a nice role player, and with work could become a solid starter.
Jabari Brown-Brown comes out of Oregon as a nice looking scoring type. He isn’t overwhelmingly athletic, and is definitely a bit slow and quite weak, even for a shooting guard, but, he still has a knack for getting to the hoop, and has decent range on his shot, so he could become an excellent scorer. He is an ok positional defender, but isn’t really going to be dominant defensively any time soon, especially considering his lack of elite quickness. Brown could become an excellent starter in time, but, he will need good coaching.
Michael Carter-Williams-Is a Point guard like player, as he is very weak, but is a very nice passer, and has excellent range. Defensively Williams is a mess though, he tends to lose his man on the perimeter, leading to open 3 point shots. He rarely finds himself getting beat to the basket though. Still, scouts are very intrigued by his offensive upside, and he could become a great scoring starter, but his defense will forever hold him back.
Point Guards:
Cory Joseph-Spending 4 years at Texas has definitely made Joseph a very polished player. He has an almost Brandon Roy feel too him, except as a Point Guard. While he doesn’t have the highest upside, Joseph is a very nice player already, he is smart with the basketball, quick, gets steals, and plays solid D, and has a nice perimeter game. He isn’t going to overwhelm anybody with athleticism or strength, but he is solid all around, and is pretty good at getting to the hoop. He could become an excellent player if he lands on the right team, but, his upside isn’t spectacular by anymeans.
Joe Jackson-is a lot like Rajon Rondo, without the great passing capability and rebounding. He has an excellent inside game, posting up opposing PG’s at will, but his perimeter shot is just plain bad. He can be a bit careless with the ball as well, but he also plays the passing lanes well. He is very weak, leading him to get pushed around, not surprising considering his diminutive size. He is just an average passer at this point in his career as well. Jackson could be a very nice scoring PG in time, but, his lack of an outside game worries scouts.
