LAS VEGAS - Jimmer Fredette's never been better.
The Brigham Young senior, already the frontrunner for every national player-of-the-year honor, outdid even his own legend Friday night, scoring a Mountain West Conference-record 52 points to lead the eighth-ranked Cougars to an 87-76 win over New Mexico in the semifinals of the MWC Tournament.
"I was just fortunate enough to be making shots and to have my team playing well," said Fredette, who broke the MWC Tournament record for field goals in a game before halftime.
Fredette had 14 field goals in the first half and 33 of the Cougars' 47 points.
The 6-foot-2 guard from Glens Falls, N.Y., made 22 of 37 shots from the floor, including 7 of 14 3-pointers, and shot just one free throw to complete a three-point play with 4:24 left for his 50th point. The final two points came on a steal and lay-in with 56 seconds to put the Cougars (30-3) on top 80-72.
"Earlier in his career, we would just kind of shake our heads. Now, we really kind of expect that," BYU coach Dave Rose said.
Fredette matched the previous MWC scoring record of 49 points, first set in 2001 by UNLV's Trevor Diggs, in a win over Arizona earlier this season.
"He's a special player, and special players can have special evenings like this, and he had one," said New Mexico coach Steve Alford, who threw five different defenders at Fredette and still couldn't slow him down.
BYU will meet San Diego State (31-2) in today's 5 p.m. championship game.
The Lobos (21-12), who had beaten BYU twice in the regular season, managed to keep pace with Fredette and the Cougars for most of the game, even after all-conference guard Dairese Gary to a knee injury just 1 1/2 minutes into the second half.
Junior forward Drew Gordon scored 17 points and pulled down 15 rebounds for the Lobos.
