Jets coach Rex Ryan (r.) calls his Steelers counterpart Mike Tomlin one of his 'favorite coaches.'
After two weeks of making it personal, Rex Ryan did not have a Steelers player or coach to target or trade barbs with Monday. Having finally beaten Peyton Manning and then getting revenge on Bill Belichick, Ryan was at a loss. "I guess (receiver) Hines Ward and big (nose tackle) Casey Hampton," Ryan said. "Those two could be early targets."
Clearly his heart was not into it. Ryan clearly likes Steelers coach Mike Tomlin and his team. "Mike Tomlin, I have a great deal of respect for Mike Tomlin, he's one of my favorite coaches," Ryan said.
Part of that respect stems from a Nov. 5, 2007, game when Ryan was the Ravens' defensive coordinator. The Steelers rolled over the Ravens 38-7.
"They were up 30-something to nothing at halftime. They ran the ball every single snap in the second half," Ryan said, exaggerating just a bit. The Steelers ran on most snaps, but backup QB Charlie Batch did try a few passes. "The one thing is we could stop the run, they got like a yard and a half a carry. It was like batting practice, he wasn't trying to rub our nose in it."
Ryan called Tomlin a "man's man," and said he makes his team play like that.
The Jets' coach illustrated that with another story from that 2007 game. Ryan said a Steelers fullback was chirping at Bart Scott on the sidelines about the score. Tomlin saw Scott and his fullback yelling back and forth. Apparently thinking the fullback should back up his words, Tomlin yelled out to Scott to ask if the then-Ravens linebacker "wanted a piece" of the fullback. "So he sent the kid back in there, they ran an isolation and Bart separated the kid's shoulder," Ryan said, laughing at his own story. "One of my favorite stories. It told me a lot about Mike Tomlin."
Ryan could not remember the player's name, though Carey Davis was the Steelers' fullback that day.
REX: I DIDN'T OUTCOACH BILL
Though his players said they beat the Patriots because of Ryan's masterful defensive schemes, the coach would not agree he had out-coached Belichick Sunday night.
"I didn't out-coach Belichick. There's no way. Our players out-played their players. That's really what it came down to. There was nothing schematically I did to win that game," Ryan said. "Our guys were prepared to play and that's my job. But to say that I out-coached Belichick, I would not agree with that. I think it's almost a joke. I don't think anybody out-coaches Belichick."
